Community Kitchens: How Mosques Are Feeding Their Neighbourhoods
From East London to Kuala Lumpur, mosque kitchens have become a frontline of community care — feeding not just Muslims but anyone who comes.
Every Friday, the kitchen of the East London Mosque prepares several hundred meals. By midday they are distributed — to worshippers, to elderly residents of the surrounding streets, to whoever arrives at the door. No one is asked their religion. The tradition is as old as the Prophet’s own household, which the early sources describe as one from which no hungry person was turned away.
What is new is scale and organisation. The food bank movement within British mosques has grown rapidly since 2010, driven partly by austerity, partly by a recognition that the mosque can be more than a place of worship. Similar patterns have appeared in France, Germany, the United States and across Muslim-majority countries where urban poverty is concentrated near the historic mosque quarter.
