Speaking to Teenagers: How Muslim Youth Groups Are Evolving
Youth programmes in mosques and Islamic centres are being redesigned around the question of what actually matters to young Muslims today.
The Saturday Islamic school that many British Muslims attended in the 1990s has not disappeared, but it has changed. Where the old model prioritised Quran recitation and basic creed, the new generation of youth programmes is more likely to mix these with sessions on identity, mental health, career advice and civic engagement.
The shift reflects a hard-won lesson: that young people who feel the programme has nothing to say to their lives will simply stop attending. The most successful youth workers have grasped that faith formation is inseparable from the formation of the whole person — and that a teenager who knows why they pray is more likely to continue praying than one who has merely been taught the mechanics.
