Muslims in Southeast Asia: A Rising Demographic Force
The world's largest Muslim populations are not in the Middle East but in South and Southeast Asia. Their growing weight is reshaping global Islam.
When people imagine the centre of the Muslim world, they often picture the Arabian Peninsula — Mecca, Medina, the holy cities. But by population, the centre of gravity lies elsewhere. Indonesia alone is home to more Muslims than all Arab countries combined. Pakistan, Bangladesh, India and Malaysia between them account for a third of the world’s Muslim population. Their scholars, their institutions and their interpretive traditions are increasingly central to global Islamic discourse.
The shift matters. Southeast Asian Islam has distinct characteristics: pluralistic in many of its historic forms, shaped by Sufi influences, marked by a tradition of accommodation with local custom. As its institutions grow in confidence — and as its scholars gain access to global platforms — its voice is being heard in debates that were once dominated by scholars from the Gulf or Egypt.
