Parenting in Two Languages: Passing Faith Across a Cultural Divide
For Muslim parents raising children in the West, transmitting Islam across languages, cultures and generations is one of the most pressing challenges they face.
The prayer mat came from home — from the village in Sylhet or Lahore, packed in a suitcase along with a few spices and a photograph. Now it sits in a semi-detached house in Leeds, and the children who grew up seeing it pray on it themselves, though they may not remember the village, and may never go. This is the texture of transmitted faith: carried in objects, absorbed in habits, passed through families rather than institutions.
What makes it difficult is the gap. Children raised in Britain carry a different formation from their parents — different assumptions about authority, about gender, about the relationship between faith and public life. The parent who grew up in a society where Islam was the background assumption is raising children for whom it is a deliberate choice. That difference changes everything about how the conversation must be had.
