The Friday Sermon in the Age of YouTube

When any khutbah can be watched by a million people, the local imam faces a new kind of competition — and a new kind of accountability.

Twenty years ago, the Friday sermon you heard was the one given by the imam of your local mosque. Today, a worshipper in Birmingham might listen to a scholar in Cairo on Friday morning, compare his approach to another in Houston, and arrive at the mosque with an opinion already formed. The congregant has, in a sense, become a consumer of sermons — with all the choice and all the distractibility that implies.

For local imams, this is both opportunity and pressure. The opportunity: ideas and approaches travel fast; a good sermon on depression or family breakdown can reach communities that had never heard such topics addressed from the minbar. The pressure: the bar has been raised, and the imam who delivers a generic homily every week is now visibly inadequate by comparison with the carefully prepared scholar whose recordings accumulate millions of views.
